Refractive Surgery Information at Eye Care Associates
Refractive surgery has the goal of providing patients with spectacle independence. Refractive surgery first became popular with radial keratotomy (RK). Then later laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) became common and popular. The latest generation of refractive surgery is called Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) or Kerato-Refractive Lenticule Extraction (KLEx). RK, LASIK, PRK, SMILE, and KLEx are all focused on changing the shape of the cornea to improve vision. However, refractive error can also be corrected by changing the power of the lens inside the eye. This is the latest and most advanced way to correct refractive error as our lens and implantable technology has improved. This can be done with Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) also know as Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) which is essentially cataract surgery but with a clear lens. Another version of this latest generation of refractive surgery can be done by placing an implant on top of the lens.
Which one is right for you depends on your age, the health of your eyes, your refractive error, and your lifestyle. The best way to determine which procedure is best for you is to have a comprehensive eye exam with one of our providers. They will be able to discuss the options that are best suited for you. As a general rule of thumb, if you are about 45 years or older, the likely best fit for you is a Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Extraction (CLE).
